Watchdog and the knives from eBay

Since when as it been the remit of the Beeb to dictate to a private company what they can and cannot sell????

I am a knife maker and make and sell knives to the public as long as they are over 18. The knives I make are LEGAL to use in the UK as long as they are being used for the purpose they are intended. They sell for £150 and upwards totally hand made and to order.

The Beeb produced a programme featuring Ray Mears in the Wild Food series, Telemark Series and the Bushcraft Series 1,2 and 3 in all Ray advocates the use of Knives in the pursuit of this hobby but the Beeb did not say anything about this. Double standards!!! Me thinks so!!

The watchdog program as put many hundreds of people out of business as sellers on eBay have hundreds of thousands of pounds of stock knives ALL LEGAL IN THE UK with no where to sell them and bills to pay. Lets hope they can sleep at night.

In the Scandinavian countries children are taught the value of knives at an early age as this has been part of their culture for thousands of years. The UK on the other hand has lost much of its culture and as an affect of this we have no need to use a knife. However I use a knife every day of my life. I am an avid bushcrafter and think nothing of going in to the woods and cutting fresh FREE food and eating this at home. This was taught to me at an early age and has kept with me. I'm 42 so no spring chicken.

The crimes committed by these 'youths' would use any knife they can get hold of usually a kitchen knife, statistics show that 90% of knife crime has been committed using everyday kitchen knives but Watchdog have not attacked the sellers of these knives. If the criminal wanted to purchase knife like mine why would he pay £150 when he can go to the local pound shop and buy a knife for a quid.

This is a load of scare mongering meant to make the producers of the programme feel good. However if these knives they purchased are illegal as the police officer stated when then were the researchers who purchased them knowing that they knives were illegal were they not prosecuted as ignorance is no defence in English Law. But knowingly purchasing this makes it double serious they need to be prosecuted for importing them in.

As for the importation eBay is a vehicle for users to sell their own goods to others. However the banning will just mean that people will go direct to the sellers' websites and purchase them there.

I use carving knives to carve wood this will be banned when the ban comes in to force. Forest workers who need knives to pursue their occupation will now have to pay more for their knives. The whole issue has angered many but eBay will continue to sell

BASEBALL BATS
HAMMERS
AXES
BILLHOOKS
MACHETTES
KITCHEN KNIVES
CUTLERY
RAZORS
FORKS,
SCREWDRIVERS
CHISELS
CHAINS
NAILS
BOTTLES
BRICKS
SCAFFOLDING
PLANKS OF WOOD
CRICKET BATS
HOCKEY STICKS

To name but a few and all these items are and have been used by criminals to cause bodily harm to others where will it stop. Banning such things will only drive it underground however supplying the names and addresses of the purchases of knives to the police should they require them would be a better action to take, please discuss

Watchdog and the knives from eBay

Well congratulations Watchdog - ebay UK announce they are to enforce a blanket ban on 'non-domestic' knives.

Feeling pleased?

So a few hundred UK businesses are shut down overnight, thousands of genuine collectors, bushcraft enthusiasts, campers, hikers etc can no longer buy the equipment on ebay to pursue their legal hobby and ebay continue to sell the one type of knife that is consistently shown to be the most common type of knife used in violent incidents!!

Don't you lot get it - ban all knives and they will use screwdrivers, ban the screwdrivers and they will use hammers - time you started to blame the criminal not the tool.

To Watchdog

Lets first clear up something.
you did not purchase ANY flick knife at all..a flick knife/switch blade uses a spring release.get your facts straight.
secondly the police officer who said that ALL those knives were illegal to own or sell is very much mistaken.
only the stealth knife and the one disguised as a pen are prohibited to carry..you can actually own ANY knife.not all knife collectors are scally morons you know..get your facts straight before scare mongering.
you can buy (and quite rightly so) those other knives in the uk LEGALLY.they don't contain a spring release,so they ARE LEGAL.
check the knife laws before going off like some paranoid fools.
knife collectors are not villains.if some idiot is going to stab someone they will do it regardless of how good the knife is.

think about it.
what collector who spends hundreds if not thousands of pounds on collecting knives is going to risk their hobby (a legal one by the way) by carrying or using one on somebody.

if you want to ban things cos they will hurt someone ban also.
